I once read that the idea of law started in Egypt with the phrase ‘an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’. Derived from righteous intentions and perspectives, it is intriguing because the law is constantly evolving over time to fit with our diverse society. Being from an unjust background and first handedly witnessing the aftermath of an uncontrolled legal system has more defined my yearning to serve justice.
I am exceedingly motivated to pursue a career in law due to the current affairs happening in the world today; particularly the human rights violations that have been raised during the Syrian civil war. A lack of justice is not only seen in Syria, it is a large scale global problem. The general principles of human right laws are not only breached during war but also on a daily scale, such as wrongful conviction and discrimination. Criminal law combined with human rights is the specific area of law I aim to thrive in. This would enable me to contribute my part to bring about equality and justice that are challenged by today’s society.
One of my greatest inspirations is Kimberley Motley, a successful lawyer representing human rights cases in civil and criminal matters. In one of her speeches, she claims that there is a lack of justness and that laws are not being used for their intended purpose – to protect. The law is not just for punishment, which is how it is used in most cases, but for protection and defence. It holds people to the same standards, regardless of their nationality, gender or religious beliefs. Motley’s ground-breaking work in Afghanistan has made me realise that lawyers can have a substantial impact on the lives of people who are unaware the laws could protect them, and this serves as one of the many reasons I am ambitious to succeed in the legal field.
Throughout my studies, I have maintained an enthusiastic approach to learning. Having chosen Mathematics as one of my A-level subjects, I have developed analytical thinking skills which enable me to manipulate precise and complex ideas. This subject has also enhanced logical thinking which I believe is crucial in analysing legal problems.
Both Biology and Psychology are study of the human mind and behaviour. Law can be seen as the regulation of human behaviour, thus furthering my interest in this subject. From Psychology I have gained knowledge of research ethics, the ability to criticize evidence and suggesting ways of overcoming them. Sufficiently presenting data and making clear cut observations are skills I have obtained from studying Biology at A-level.
As an active member of the Biology debate club, I take part in the discussion of controversial issues such as three-parent babies. This has helped to boost my confidence and my ability to explain and persuade skilfully. I was also part of a ‘Heart to Heart’ team, in which I provide support and advice to students who may be dealing with challenging situations. Being a part time waitress, I am capable of crisis management and can perform under pressure. The ability to work as part of a team is another skill I have developed, which is a vital concept demonstrated on a daily basis within lawyers.
Studying law at undergraduate level gives me the opportunity to gain a more profound understanding of the legal world and the consequences that stem from its decisions. The value and versatility which the law degree provides is the primary reason I aspire to excel as a law student. With passion and dedication, a legal career path is promising and I will without a doubt be an asset to your institution.

There are many events in a person’s life, but only a few of them are important and define a new start in their path. To me, one of these events is the choice, which I had to make about my future education.

Now, that I have graduated from high-school, the decision which I have to make for my future career seems like one of the hardest decisions that I have to make in my life.
I chose to study a business related course at your university, because to me it has always been interesting and it offers good opportunities for future development and implementation.
During my research I found out that your university offers their students excellent academic quality and well-developed practically oriented education. Students are trained to identify, analyze and evaluate the role of key factors, processes and structures in business and management.
The matter that I want to study is very lively, vibrant and dynamic and it requires many qualities from the people who study it and apply it in their work. I accept this challenge with confidence. As a participant in national and international projects organized by my school I learned how to work in a team. The discussion club “Debate” in high school, of which I am an active member for three years, taught me analytical thinking and strengthened my communication skills. My participation in various extracurricular activities made me disciplined and organized. I’m ready to deal with the circumstances, whatever they are, by showing flexibility and persistence.
I believe that all the young people around the world are closely related, regardless of where they come from, they happen to meet somewhere. And they understand each other easily, because ambitious young people have common interest and aims. Having been born in the UK, with parents from Sri Lanka, I have experienced a lot in terms of becoming familiar with and exploring other cultures. I have constantly had to suffer the loss of loved ones throughout my life with the civil war in Sri Lanka and the severe number of other problems which existed there. Earlier this year I lost my Granddad to unnatural causes who had already been injured by the bomb that took the lives of both my Aunt and Grandmother a few years earlier. It is because of these events that I strongly wish to undertake a science/mathematics based course which will allow me to help others in the future whether this is physically, mentally or psychologically.
The Bio-medical course provides the fascinating opportunity to join a part of the industry which plays a substantial role in aiding further medical/scientific developments and creating ways to save and greatly improve the lives of others. Moreover, I wish to take this course over all the vast choices of biological courses as I personally believe this course suits my abilities and is of great interest to me, especially the lab work involving some IT. Furthermore, the course will offer great job opportunities after graduation which will revolve around aiding others and for me that is very important.
My desire and dedication to this type of course is represented through my choice of A level’s. Biology sets the typical foundation for anatomical and botany knowledge. Mathematics is fundamental when it comes to practical work involved in biology and is also important for problem solving. . I also believe History relates to this career as it has proven useful to understand how medical developments changed over time and the factors that contributed to this change. Moreover, I believe History is of great importance for developing analysis, interpretation and organisation skills.
I have studied at Dartford Grammar School for secondary school education till the end of GCSE’s and moved to Wilmington Grammar School, taking A levels over IB. I have taken part in various extracurricular activities including Chess and Cricket as well as taken part in the bronze and silver duke of Edinburgh Awards. I successfully completed my Bronze in 2023 and currently near the end of my Silver with my expedition out of the way and sections done with the certificate and badge to be received shortly. I found D of E an enjoyable experience which also helped me gain crucial teamwork and leadership skills.
Among my achievements, I completed a week’s worth of work experience at Oakfield Primary School in October 2023 and I felt I gained valuable insight of what it is like to work with young children but most importantly with other adults. I believe this work experience is useful as it may help if I am able to obtain a work experience placement or even a job in the future within the pathology labs of an NHS hospital which I’m looking to do in the future at Darent Valley, Queen Elizabeth or Lewisham Hospitals. I hope that I will be given the opportunity to prove my potential and hard-working nature, as well as to redeem my lacklustre AS results that did not clearly represent my ability to perform in many subjects.
As you can see from my references I am easy to work with and I have not had any trouble with teachers nor other students. I am up for a challenge, I am a fast learner and I am looking to do further work experience along the course of this year. This will help me to set a good foundation for use in CV’s and to help me with future prospects. I am a reliable and hard working student and I take and reflect on criticism when given. I believe that gaining these experiences will help me to understand the working environment more clearly and help me pursue possible career paths in the future.
